Open Data are considered as the gold of the digital age, on the basis of which new, value-adding content are developing and which have an effect on all aspects of society. Whether as an impulse for new business models, as a data resource for research or in the interest of transparency and openness in administrative processes – opening stored data contributes to bringing this gold to the surface.

Despite the growing presence of the Open Data movement, not everyone has been convinced of the added value created by Open Data.

Many questions are raised such as: Should a city sell its data instead of giving them away for free? Is there a real added value created from opening data for administrations and citizens?

With the slogan “Creating added value with Open Data”, the Berlin Open Data Day 2018 shows how cities can benefit from Open Data as an important foundation for a ‘Smart City’.

Initiated by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and in cooperation with Fraunhofer Fokus and the Competence Center Public IT, this year’s Berlin Open Day is held on 11th October starting from 8.30 am at Fraunhofer Fokus, Kaiserin-Augusta-Allee 31.

The topic of this year’s BODDy is the question of what potential do new technologies such as Blockchain and artificial intelligence unlock for handling Open Data and how Open Data can respond to the challenges posed by the energy and traffic transition of a rapidly growing metropolis like Berlin.

Apart from insights into the latest developments and trends, visitors can take part in four parallel workshops to discuss the diverse practical applications of Open Data for ‘Smart Cities’.
