Berlin is an important and creative centre for the gaming industry – game developers, specialists, investors and many more come together to work not only with existing companies, but also to establish new start-ups. Today, more than 200 companies are developing games for various platforms such as PCs, consoles, handheld or mobile devices, and exporting them to 50 countries around the world. According to the study conducted by the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software, this market has seen a strong growth in the past year alone:

  • the average age of computer and video gamers has risen from 31 years to 35.5 years
  • the age group of 50+ has grown to 8.7 million within a 12-month period
  • 34.1 million people in Germany are currently playing video or computer games
  • 17.9 million are male and 16.2 million are female
  • in 2016, the gaming industry generated a total turnover of 2.13 billion Euro – an increase of 7% compared to 2015

The increase in and the ongoing interest of gamers in various age and target groups and the significant increase in sales show a clear trend: computer and video games are no longer a niche product. Instead, they are increasingly developing into everyday media. The Berlin Senate Administration for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises therefore wishes to promote and support this growing market and its young talents.
