The Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises of the State of Berlin is driving forward the further expansion of broadband infrastructure in Berlin as a prerequisite for a digital city of the future. The political and economic challenge is to expand the high-performance network infrastructures nationwide and promptly in a future-proof manner for the gigabit society.

In terms of short-term demand, Berlin's households and business locations are currently well supplied with bandwidths of up to 100 Mbit/s via the technology mix of FTTB/H, FTTC and HFC. In the medium to long term, demand for the necessary FTTB/H connections will increase. Berlin has a need for development here in order to achieve nationwide, future-proof and sustainable coverage.

In order to comply with the complexity of Berlin at the administrative level and the large number of players, the state adopted a gigabit strategy on June 15, 2021. This describes a concrete coverage target, an implementation framework and specific fields of action.

Since October 2018, the Broadband Competence Team Berlin (BKT-Berlin) has been supporting the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises with broadband expansion. The BKT-Berlin is managed by TÜV Rheinland Consulting GmbH on behalf of the Senate Department and is the first point of contact for companies, associations, private individuals, and all other relevant broadband stakeholders in the state.

Together with BKT-Berlin, the Senate Department is conducting an intensive dialog with the telecommunications network operators operating in Berlin in order to identify and systematically reduce barriers to expansion. As a first step, basic information has been prepared as technical information to stimulate broadband expansion in Berlin.

In order to highlight and close the gap between demand and expansion in the short term, the idea of a broadband demand platform was developed and implemented together with BKT-Berlin and key stakeholders. The Berlin Broadband Portal has been online since the end of 2019. Here, Berliners and companies can report their needs on the interactive platform. The goal is to support the expanding telecommunications companies in aligning their expansion strategies with actual needs and thus to design them efficiently. A visual map shows at a glance where demand is very high and urgent action is needed.

If you, as a company or citizen, have specific bandwidth requirements, you can simply report them in our broadband portal by submitting a demand report. You can do this easily for individual addresses or via a free account that includes several reports that can be edited at a later date.

The telecommunications companies expanding in Berlin have their own access to the portal and view the reports, so that they can react accordingly in order to send offers to the users. An overview of the network operators with products and contact can be found in the broadband forum on the portal page.
