Record-breaking network speeds: 5G technology is being tested in Berlin
To achieve this, Deutsche Telekom will be working together with several partners including companies, startups and organisations, combining their knowledge to test 5G innovations in Berlin. Already today, international cutting-edge research is carried out in Berlin in the field of digital infrastructure. Attesting to that fact is the Leistungszentrum für Digitale Vernetzung (Centre of Excellence for Digital Networking), which is part of Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Berlin and funded by the Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research. The Centre of Excellence is developing platforms to test and validate innovative technologies based on the 5G mobile telecommunications standard.
“As a result of the booming economy and research sectors in Berlin, there is a demand for the convergent networks of tomorrow,” said Cornelia Yzer, Senator for Economics, Technology and Research. “This is why I’m particularly happy that with Deutsche Telekom we have managed to get on board an innovative network operator who will assist us in developing a testing ground for 5G technology in the public sphere in Berlin. In doing so we will be able to further strengthen our position as a leading digital centre on the global market. Berlin will be the first city to develop a smart network, paving the way for a future smart city. I’m sure that this initiative will only be the beginning Berlin's innovative strength will be a major driver for other actors from the world of business and research to develop 5G technologies in Berlin.”
