Twitter teams up with Berlin-based streaming service SoundCloud
Already in 2014, Twitter attempted to enter the music industry through “Twitter Music”, but abandoned the project later on. The San Francisco-based company now senses a new opportunity in the collaboration with the Berlin enterprise SoundCloud, which could also mean a stronger expansion in the German market that was rather timid so far.
For SoundCloud, the financial injection comes just in time. SoundCloud frequently has to deal with challenges such as copyrights issues, even though the music streaming service is popular for its DJ-sets, remixes and mashups. Even music journalists use the platform when researching new music talents. According to company-own data, 175 million people use SoundCloud daily. The financial injection from Twitter could help the two founders Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss to develop their business and the new subscription service “Sound Cloud”. On the other hand, the collaboration enables Twitter to use music streams and thus keep its followers on the social media platform for longer.
